I'm back wahaha. When you see me actually blogging and actually blogging on such an idyllic topic, you know exams are over. Yeaps.. they are and they sucked.. oh wells...
When I was tearing my hair out mugging during one of the copious wee hours of the morning, I came across this powerpoint showing what some statistics on what the world would be if it was shrunk to a village of 100 people.
According to the clip, if you've never seen a relative die in war, been a slave or been tortured.. you're luckier than 500 million people. If you have keep food in the fridge, clothes in the closet and sleep tight in your bed each night, you're wealthier than 75% of the world's population. If you have a bank account, you're amongst the wealthiest 8% of the world.
If we lived in the shrunken world village, we'll be the amongst the 8 who own a computer, 7 who have higher education.
Well, that kinda put things into perspective for a while. There I was poring over my books, moaning about my sucky exam-life, with the cup of coffee my dad made me, the reminders of sleeping early (no.. she didn't mean early like early in the morning..) from my mom, the whatever thingies grandma brews during exam time, and ya moaning about my life...
That's not saying I'll never whine about my life again, I'm someone who needs to whine to get it out of my system, but I'll also remember that after exams, I'll be going to town with my friends to stuff my face, watch movies, sing KTV, shop, spending the money 80% of the world can't even find to feed themselves...
It was hard to be that sensible about things during exams which I agree bring out the worst in some people in more ways than one. When you can do nothing but study like your life depended on it, it becomes less important that I'm luckier than the 1 billion who cannot read. Faced with stacks and stacks of notes and books, I also forget that I am amongst the very few having a chance of higher education. I forget that notes and books didn't drop from the sky and I'm not the one paying for them. Hell.. I don't even pay my own stationery...
But now, I have all the time in the world to ponder my life and I realise how lucky I am. Now exam-free, I appreciate the simple pleasures of life...
Eating out with friends, chatting over the food, not caring how much time we spend
Watching tv and not having to limit the time spent to the how-many-minutes you have set for a break
Waking up each morning and being able to go right back to sleep if I want to
Reading a non-textbook book without guilt
Stare out of the window
Laugh at the dog
Being able to sleep when you want to
The list goes on... but then I remember the clip I saw not so long ago... and realise that the simple pleasures of life are not as simple after all.
And then people and things around you become much more significant. And I become more thankful and appreciative of all I have when I realise I do have a lot. As I said, this is not some turning point in my life and I'm not going to stop whining when I want to. But now, I will also remember how much I have going for me and that will be enough to keep me going :)
On a side note, to balance out this uncharacteristic post, to remind my dear readers Mabelle is as Mabelle as ever...
I have discovered the joys of wrinking my dad's shirt. I can create creases in his shirt like paper! Like he'll be innocently standing there and I'll go do funny things to the shirt he's wearing. Ya before he went to work. And I told him hey your shirts not wrinkle-free, then he said yeps that's cos he wants his shirt to be pure cotton or something and he doesn't want those wrinkle-free things they sell because wrinkles add character. Okay. So when Mom asked me hello what are you doing I told her I was being helpful cos my Dad liked his shirts with character.
